Outlook
An animated email signature for Outlook.
Outlook on the web, the new Outlook, Outlook for Mac and current Microsoft 365 versions play animated GIF signatures. Draw yours, download the GIF and a still PNG, and set them up for every Outlook your contacts use.
How it works
How to make an animated signature for Outlook
01
Draw your signature
Sign with a finger, mouse, trackpad or Apple Pencil. Steady hand smooths shaky lines, and you can reshape any curve by its points or trace a photo of your signature.
02
Pick a look
Ink on Paper suits Outlook’s light theme; for dark-mode readers, a transparent GIF keeps the background out of the way.
03
Download the GIF and PNG
Choose Email signature on the export step. The GIF is for Outlook versions that animate; the PNG of the finished signature is for older ones.
Formats
Signature files for Outlook
GIF
Loops in the Outlook versions that animate. 480, 800, 1200 px wide; use 480 for email.
PNG
The finished signature, transparent and 3000 px wide, for Outlook 2016 and earlier, where a GIF wouldn’t move.
Transparent GIF
Transparent background with an edge matched to your ink, for colored templates and dark mode.

How to add a GIF signature in every Outlook
Insert the GIF with the signature editor’s picture button. Pasted images can arrive as attachments, which never animate.
New Outlook and Outlook on the web
- Open Settings (the gear), then Accounts, then Signatures.
- Click New signature and name it.
- Use the picture button in the editor’s toolbar to insert your GIF, then drag a corner to size it.
- Choose it for new messages and for replies, then click Save.
Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open File, Options, Mail, then Signatures.
- Click New, name it, and use the picture icon above the editor to insert your GIF.
- Pick it under New messages and Replies/forwards, then click OK.
Outlook 2007 to 2016 for Windows show only a GIF’s first frame, and a reveal’s first frame is blank. Use the PNG for those, or see the fixes.
Outlook for Mac
- Open Outlook, Settings, then Signatures.
- Click + to add a signature and name it.
- Drag your GIF from Finder into the signature, then close the window to save.
- Set it as the default under Choose default signature.
Questions
Outlook animated signature questions
Do animated GIF signatures work in Outlook?
Yes, in Outlook on the web, the new Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac, and current Microsoft 365 versions of classic Outlook. Outlook 2007 to 2016 for Windows show only the first frame.
Why isn’t my GIF signature moving in Outlook?
Either the recipient uses Outlook 2016 or earlier, Play animated GIFs is turned off under File, Options, Advanced, or Windows animation effects are off. See 5 fixes for Outlook GIF signatures.
Why does my signature look blank in older Outlook?
A signature reveal starts from an empty frame, and older Outlook shows only that first frame. Send those contacts the PNG version instead.
What size should the GIF be in Outlook?
Use the 480 px GIF and size it to about half that width in the signature editor, so it stays sharp on high-resolution screens.
Is it free?
Drawing, styling and previewing are free, without an account. Downloading a signature uses one from a pack: 5 for $1.99, 15 for $4.99, 50 for $12.99. A pack is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and unused signatures don’t expire.
