Gmail

A Gmail animated signature, in your own handwriting.

Gmail plays animated GIFs in signatures, on the web and in its apps. Draw your signature once, download a looping GIF of it writing itself out, and add it to Gmail in four steps.

How it works

How to make an animated signature for Gmail

  1. 01

    Draw your signature

Sign with a finger, mouse, trackpad or Apple Pencil. Steady hand smooths shaky lines, and you can reshape any curve by its points or trace a photo of your signature.

  2. 02

Pick a look for white inboxes

Ink on Paper suits Gmail’s white background. Add a line such as your role or company under your name if you like.

  3. 03

    Download the email files

Choose Email signature on the export step. You get a looping GIF, 480 px wide for email, and a transparent PNG of the finished signature.

Formats

  • Transparent GIF

For colored or dark email templates, with an edge matched to your ink.

  • PNG

The finished signature, 3000 px wide and transparent, for a still version or a document.

How to add a GIF signature to Gmail

Use Gmail on a computer: the signature editor there takes images, and the signature then goes out with mail you send from Gmail on the web.

  • Add it on the web

    1. Open Gmail, click the gear icon, then See all settings.
    2. On the General tab, scroll to Signature and click Create new. Name it.
    3. Type anything you want above it, then click Insert image, choose Upload and pick your GIF.
    4. Click the image and choose Small or Medium, then click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Send yourself a test email: the editor can show the GIF still, but the email you receive will animate.

  • Set it as your default

    1. Under Signature defaults, pick it for New emails use.
    2. Pick it, or a shorter text signature, for On reply/forward use.
    3. Click Save Changes.

You can keep several signatures and switch between them from the pen icon at the bottom of any email you write.

  • On your phone

    1. The Gmail app’s own mobile signature setting takes text only.
    2. Recipients see your animated signature on any phone when you send from Gmail on the web.
    3. For mail sent from the app, keep the mobile signature short, or leave it empty.

Questions

Gmail animated signature questions

Does Gmail support animated GIF signatures?

Yes. Gmail plays animated GIFs in signatures, in the browser and in the Gmail apps for Android and iPhone.

Why isn’t my GIF animating in the Gmail signature editor?

The editor can show a still frame. Send yourself a test email; the GIF animates in the email itself.

What size should my Gmail signature GIF be?

Use the 480 px GIF and choose Small or Medium after clicking it in the editor, so it shows at about half its width and stays sharp. More in the email signature GIF size guide.

Can I add a GIF signature in the Gmail app?

The app’s mobile signature setting takes text only. Set up the GIF signature on Gmail on the web, where it’s added to the mail you send from there.

Is it free?

Drawing, styling and previewing are free, without an account. Downloading a signature uses one from a pack: 5 for $1.99, 15 for $4.99, 50 for $12.99. A pack is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and unused signatures don’t expire.
