How to add a signature animation in CapCut.
A signature that writes itself out at the start or end of a video makes it unmistakably yours. Here is how to put one into CapCut on your phone or computer, with a blend mode, a transparent GIF, or green screen.
Updated
Step 1: Get a signature animation file
CapCut can place and blend a reveal but can’t draw one along your strokes. Make the animation first: draw your signature in Everstroke, pick a look, and choose CapCut on the export step. You get an overlay MP4 and a transparent GIF.
- Overlay MP4: your signature on plain black (for light ink) or white (for dark ink), meant for a blend mode. Keeps glow.
- Transparent GIF: a transparent background, placed directly with no blending.
- Green-screen MP4: a #00FF00 background for Chroma key, if you prefer keying.
Step 2 on a phone: overlay and blend
- Open your project and move the playhead to where the signature should start.
- Tap Overlay, then Add overlay, and choose the overlay MP4.
- Pinch and drag to size and position it in the preview.
- With the overlay selected, tap Blend and choose Screen for light ink on black, or Multiply for dark ink on white. The background disappears and the writing stays.
- Trim the overlay so it ends where you want the signature to finish.
Step 2 on a computer: CapCut desktop
- Import the overlay MP4 and drag it onto a track above your footage.
- Select it, and in the Video panel under Basic, set Blend mode to Screen (light ink) or Multiply (dark ink).
- Use Position and Scale in the same panel to place it.
Using the transparent GIF or green screen instead
For the transparent GIF, add it as an overlay the same way; it needs no blend mode. Its edge is hard rather than soft, which suits clean, flat looks better than glowing ones.
For the green-screen MP4, add it as an overlay, then open Remove BG, choose Chroma key, pick the green with the color picker, and raise Intensity until the green is gone. Glow isn’t included in the green-screen file, because keying would eat it.
Tips for a signature that looks good on video
- Match the frame: export 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, and 16:9 for YouTube.
- Use light ink over dark footage and dark ink over bright footage.
- As an outro, give it a second or two of hold before the cut.
- Add a short line under the name, such as “Photography” or “Films”.
The same overlay works in Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro with their Screen and Multiply blend modes. More on signature animations for videos.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Why does my overlay show a black box in CapCut?
The blend mode isn’t set. Select the overlay, tap Blend and choose Screen for light ink. For dark ink on a white background, choose Multiply.
Can CapCut make a signature animation by itself?
It can wipe a signature image in with a keyframed mask, which reveals everything left to right at once. A stroke-by-stroke reveal needs an animated file made elsewhere.
Will the glow survive in CapCut?
Yes, with the overlay MP4 and the Screen blend. The transparent GIF and the green-screen MP4 don’t include glow.
Skip the keyframes.
